U14's lose against Harlow
By Andrew Metcalfe
Chingford get another go at overhauling Gary Barlow - it will happen - but not today!
Chingford welcomed our 'north of the M25' neighbours on a crisp autumn morning - with respect in the air for Remembrance Sunday, the game kicked off sharp at 10am. Both teams settled in immediately and the first ten minutes proved an even encounter with play remaining in the centre third. Slowly, Harlow started to impose on the Chingford line, rucking quicker and pressing stronger. Harlow's Full back was always going to be one to watch and sure enough, with 15 minutes gone, Harlow took a run from deep, through the defence openside, and duly scored. A clean conversion meant Chingford were 0-7 down.
Chingford were able to regain possession from the kick off and managed to settle the game down in the centre of the pitch. No team could take advantage and a forwards game progressed for the next 5 minutes. At some point the ball was pushed out to the wing and Ant took an excellent catch at his feet to both prevent the knock-on and provide Chingford with a much needed 10 yards. Ethan took a trade mark pick and ran the ball to Harlow's 22. After a loss of possession was saved by a Harlow knock-on, the resulting re-set scrum allowed Jack to pass to William who went straight through to give Chingford a first score. Seb with the conversion levelled the game 7-7. 20 minutes in.
Harlow swapped the re-start and took advantage of the possession with an immediate score over the Ching line. No conversion so scores were 7-12 to Harlow.
Harlow now seemed to find their feet and produced some really direct aggressive play. It took all Chingford had to hold on, but to their credit they did. A very good smother tackle from William on Harlow's Full back prevented the visitors from pushng into Chingford's 22 and a strong display from Matthew, Devin and Daragh kept the game in the middle of the pitch. With final play, Harlow managed to sneak another score and conversion and go in over a score ahead at half time. Half time 7-19.
The second half started with Chingford getting and holding possession. Oskar put in a good run with Josh equally making good yardage. Off a ruck, Jack passed to Seb and then onto Will who released Kayden on the right wing. Kayden kept inside the line to produce a really good team effort try. No conversion but scores at 12-19.
A double exchange of scores followed, Harlow scoring off their scrum blindside (with a very good kick from near the touchline) and Chingford equalling the play with Ethan running right to left popping to Will who managed to hit the line for a second try. Seb converted to bring the score back to 19-26. Harlow then immediately scored off the kick-off, their fullback running right through Chingford's defence and another good kick made the score 19-33. Chingford, undeterred, responded with a strong attack up to Harlow's 22. Oliver and Matthew putting in strong runs. After a Chingford line-out, Harlow stole the ball but were held up. On the resulting Chingford scrum Ethan got the ball to William and in a resulting Maul, sneaked a run to the Harlow line. Devin in excellent support pinched the ball and took it over to score a richly deserved try. Seb re-set the points difference with another conversion. 26-33 and a fantastic 15 minutes of rugby.
I would love to continue the next paragraph with the same see-saw scoring but Harlow got two scores straight off kick-offs and Chingford had no reply. Final score 26-45 to Harlow but for much of the game Chingford were fully engaged and equal to the task.
Conclusion is....work to do but not an impossible task at all! Harlow are proving a handful but Chingford have the potential. An excellent match and played fairly and cleanly.
